FSMA Meet Trailer Curtains

On January 4, 2011 the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law by President Obama and the final rule went into effect in April 2016.  The goal was to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus of federal regulators from responding to contamination to preventing it.  There are five major elements of the law, but there are two that we wanted to focus on; Preventive Controls and Inspection & Compliance.

  • Preventive Controls – For the first time, FDA has a legislative mandate to require comprehensive, prevention-based controls across the food supply to prevent or significantly minimize the likelihood of problems occurring.

  • Inspection and Compliance – The legislation recognizes that inspection is an important means of holding industry accountable for its responsibility to produce safe food. FDA is committed to applying its inspection resources in a risk-based manner and adopting innovative inspection approaches.

There are multiple temp control options available that can help ensure preventative controls are in place, but one of the easiest places to start is by installing curtains. Rear and Side trailer door curtains help form a barrier between the cool air within the trailer and the warm, humid outside air.  They also help keep dust, insects, and debris out of the trailer. These types of preventative coverage help keep the right controls in place and ensure you stay in compliance with current government regulations.

Depending on your delivery route and customer base you can be looking at multiple doors on your trailer that need to be covered.  Fortunately Randall Temp Control has been in the business of producing high quality curtains for over 30 years, offering eight innovative rear and side door options.  Our latest curtain additions, the Rear & Side Door Pull Down Trailer Curtains (RPDC) and (SPDC), offer a new retractable design.  These curtains have been field-tested to help foodservice and grocery distributors strengthen their temperature control posture by providing an easy to operate, unique perimeter brush assembly to contain air flow, and provide drivers and loaders with an unobstructed pass through.
